“A plastic bag over my head, I breathe shallow, and this is the life that we grieved. Hands in hand we reached for the sun, pulling it inwards to light the dark —Asthma.”
– Stacey Ejiroghene Okparavero, Artist & Curator
Breathe is created in awareness of the devastating effect of air pollution in Nigeria. In response to World Asthma Day 2020, this project aims to advocate and encourage the Nigerian government to carry out measures to manage air pollutants, such as gas flaring in the Niger Delta region, carbon emissions from cars and generators, CFC’s found in most aerosol sprays and asthma inhalers.
The exhibition addresses these issues through art works created on paper, canvas, metal sculpture and poetry.
The Breathe collection on paper explores the meditative possibility of the medium. It is created in small scale, to challenge the gaze of the viewer and how they interact with the work. Additionally, the creative process draws on meditative techniques to sooth the mind. The forms in the artist’s drawings are organic in an aesthetic she has finessed over years of study. The text embedded in the drawings evoke fluidity while it offers up mantras as cue to reflect of the breath.
The works in metal repurposes discarded auto and generator parts in a way to open a dialogue on the impact of automobile and generator pollution on the environment.
The exhibition aims to support urban biodiversity through the addition of a thoughtfully curated plant installation. This aims to encourage the planting of trees and indoor plants that purify the air and neutralises toxins in the air caused by pollution.
His artistic practice is an observation of the world around us, that he puts into artworks for others to
relate to or disagree with. Through Videography, Poetry and Creative Coding, he attempts to
highlight the realms of the human performance and the human mind in different scenarios. These
situations can be described as social, internal, or even biological, which is faced in everyday lives.
With a dose of technology, he asserts that there is an endless range of progress in the human
creative endeavours.
